Having orchestrated a portion of the Riceboy Sleeps album, by Jónsi & Alex, for a live performance at The Church of St. Paul The Apostle in 2010, I'm pleased to announce that I will be orchestrating the Riceboy Sleeps album in its entirety for a world premiere tour this summer.

In 2009, Riceboy Sleeps received groundbreaking success and praise from sources such as BBC, Metro, NME and The Independent, praised for its lush orchestration and indulgent atmospheric ambience. The following year I was commissioned to transcribe and orchestrate selections from the album for Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival, for Jónsi & Alex to perform with orchestra and choir. Committing this music to the page was a tall order as the essence of the album is comprised of sound samples and manipulated field recordings.

This summer I’m honored to collaborate with my good friends Jónsi & Alex on the World Premiere performance of the entire Riceboy Sleeps album - contributing new orchestral & choral arrangements.I look forward to joining them at the Philharmonie de Paris and Barbican Hall shows to celebrate the tenth anniversary of this release. No collaboration is unlikely when the end goals are the same. A meeting of two artists who illustrate different corners of the musical landscape, come together to create a new statement that takes their collective strengths to higher elevations and encompasses new terrains.

So it is on the first collaborative journey of Canadian musicians Venetian Snares and Daniel Lanois. What started as mutual respect for one another’s work, led to several years of a creative germination resulting in an eight-track full-length exploration released May 4th on Timesig/Planet Mu. The path began in 2014, after Lanois reached out to Venetian Snares (Aaron Funk) as a fan of his work. The project started to take root in Summer of 2016, after Funk hung around Toronto between shows. Taking his gear to Lanois’ studio, the two began to play for the first time together in what would prove to be a formative moment in their creative journey together.

To kick off the show, Ensemble LPR will be performing a variation of Solstice, an original composition by its Founding and Artistic Director, David Handler.

Ensemble LPR at Naumburg Orchestral Concerts in Central Park and David Handler World Premiere

Starting off the 2018 Naumburg Orchestral Concert season on Tuesday, June 12, Ensemble LPR celebrates the birthdays of two living composers. The East Coast premiere of Thea Musgrave’s Aurora is part of a world-wide celebration of her 90th birthday. Inspired by lines from Act III of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the work represents dawn and the vast potential of youth. In honor of John Corigliano’s 80th birthday, Ensemble LPR will perform his The Red Violin: Suite for Violin and Orchestra with award-winning violinist Tessa Lark. In keeping with the group’s mission of presenting works by living composers alongside new interpretations of the standard repertoire, the concert will also feature a world premiere by David Handler the ensembles' Founding Artistic and Executive Director, Fanfare & Fugue (for a Fish), an ode to Le Poisson Rouge. Performances will also include well-known favorites, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings and Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune.

The performance of Ensemble LPR has been made possible by a generous grant from the Hess & Helyn Kline Foundation and the concert will be hosted by Paul Cavalconte.

LPR X at SummerStage: Bowie Symphonic

The cultural influence that the late musician, iconoclast, and actor David Bowie had on millions of people can’t be overstated. The late British star, who called New York his home, recorded his final album Blackstar in secret. Ensemble LPR will perform Bowie’s Blackstar in full with Conductor and Arranger Evan Ziporyn, plus a special performance by the Donny McCaslin Group, whose ensemble worked with Bowie on Blackstar.
